Wearing eyeliner doesn’t make you “girly” or “gay” a lot of girls actually find it attractive. If you wanna put concealer on that pimple go ahead. It doesn’t make you less of a man. Makeup is not intrinsically feminine. Don’t let society’s screwed up gender roles stop you from expressing yourself.

"As stated numerous times by many feminists, girls don’t wear makeup for the approval of men. But by all means, wear eyeliner cause girls like it."

"Nervous about putting on makeup? Only put on enough concealer to cover up any small blemishes. Any other flaws will just have to be accepted. You know, like they already are."

"Women won’t judge you for wearing makeup, and as we all know, women are the most hostile enforcers of patriarchal gender roles, so with them accepting you, you have nothing to worry about other than homophobic and misogynistic men."

Woah. Um. I want to address something, mainly the fact that I think you kinda missed OP’s message. Their main message was “Don’t let society’s screwed up gender roles stop you from expressing yourself.”

You seemed to interpret that as a bad thing which I don’t really get. Granted you bring up the fact that, “so with them [women] accepting you, you have nothing to worry about other than homophobic and misogynistic men.” While this is a completely valid point, this is still intrinsically a problem of the system.

I can’t speak for the OP but I read their message as a reassurance.

Twas a good message, aye, but my main problem with it was just how lacking in reality it was. Sure, it’d be great if guys could wear makeup without judgement or harassment, but it’s just not the case. It’s kind of like those people who respond to ‘Stop crimes against *insert marginalized people here*’ with ‘Stop crimes against EVERYBODY uwu’ A good intent, yes, but impossible to pursue realistically and in general, a waste of time.

Makeup is not gender neutral. It should be gender neutral, but is not. And personally, I think an even bigger concern we should have with makeup is not its stigma for men, but for women. Women have been trained that they must have it on at all times, that they must hide any at all blemishes and imperfections from eyes that expect nothing less than magazine cover beauty in every woman. I have met too many girls that consider themselves physically incapable of leaving their house without applying what I personally consider (and granted, my judgement is almost definitely skewed on this topic,) gratuitous amounts of makeup.

No, I’m not one of those guys who says ‘i don’t like it when girls wear makeup cause it’s false advertising' pbthbfffft pbbt phhht. If you like makeup, dress your face in the most luxurious foundations and eyeliners and lipsticks and what have you to your heart's content. I just think that too many women use makeup for a crutch to foster image issues that they shouldn't have rather than a form of self expression.

And honestly, my real reaction to men not being able to wear makeup? A wholly sarcastic ‘Boo-fuckin’ who.’ Because in all honesty, how many people on this website actually care? Someone posts a gifset about a guy expressing his displeasure in being unable to wear makeup to make himself not ugly, and Tumblr’s immediate response, instead of warm welcoming words of comfort similar to OP’s above, a harsh slew attacking him for not fully comprehending that it was the patriarchy’s doing that caused him to be unable to wear makeup. So this establishes that men are not able to have any sort of thought going against the patriarchy without being harshly reminded that it’s their own fault, even though they were already showing signs of wanting to rebel against it.

But you know what really makes me pissed off about this whole thing? Personally, (god I’ve used that word too fucking much,) I’d love to be able to wear makeup regularly. I’ve been in enough theater productions to know I look damn good in eyeliner. But you know what stops me? Fear. I’ve never even considered myself that ‘masculine’ of a person and the idea of putting makeup on and going out in public frightens me. I’m afraid of the men who will call me hateful things and give me dirty looks, I’m afraid of the women who, because I have not had the years of practice at applying my own makeup such as they have, will laugh at my inability to properly apply the products and maybe say just as hateful things as the men would, and I’m afraid of the people on Tumblr, who as soon as I say anything about the mistreatment I received for taking their advice, will condemn me and tell me that it’s my fault for being a man in a patriarchal society.

No, but by all means, let’s allow the boys who failed to truly fall out of their emo phase to wear eyeliner because ‘a lot of girls actually find it attractive,’ because as we all fucking know, that’s the point of makeup, right?

To get the attention of other people?

so are we gonna discuss how fucked up it is that women have to wear makeup to be taken seriously at work and job interviews but if a woman has a genuine interest in and enjoyment of cosmetics she is written off as shallow, vain, and stupid, and consequently not taken seriously
